Mel Pender – Champions for Change Scholarship Fund

The Mel Pender Champions for Change Scholarship Fund was established with the belief that no child should be left behind. Unfortunately, many young people encounter significant challenges after graduating from high school, particularly when it comes to navigating the complexities of securing financial support for college. A number of these students face food insecurity while attending classes due to limited resources, and some are unhoused, moving from one temporary living arrangement to another. Despite these obstacles, they remain motivated to continue their education, driven by their vision of a brighter future.

To address these challenges, The Gathering of Eagles Foundation collaborates with young people through the Mel Pender Champions for Change Scholarship. This scholarship is designed to bridge the financial gap for students in need. Each year, six deserving students are chosen through a competitive application process to receive the scholarship. Selection is based on academic achievement, athletic involvement, and a demonstrated, verifiable need as acknowledged by the student’s family or educational institution.

Scholarship Criteria

•    Applicants must be between 18 and 24 years of age.

•    Candidates must be dependents of active duty, retired, or disabled veterans.

•    Applicants should have participated in high school sports and express a desire to pursue both academic and athletic careers.

•    A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for those attending state schools or universities.

•    Candidates must demonstrate outstanding citizenship, including a record of volunteerism.

•    The applicant’s family must be economically challenged, with financial need that can be verified.
