ABOUT THE GATHERING OF EAGLES FOUNDATION

The Gathering of Eagles, 501c3 embodies Dr. Melvin "Mel" Pender, Jr.'s dedication to honoring the sacrifices and achievements of Olympians while nurturing future generations.

Our aim is to positively transform the lives of 10,000 emerging and established track and field champions. Through targeted resources, scholarships, and community-building events, we strengthen the bonds between athletes, honor the legacy of the sport, and pave the way for future generations to flourish.

OUR FOUNDERS

Melvin "Mel" Pender, born on October 31, 1937, in Atlanta, Georgia, is a distinguished former American sprinter, Olympic gold medalist, and military veteran. His journey from a segregated upbringing to the global Olympic stage is a testament to resilience and determination. His commitment to community and sports continues to define his legacy, reflected in his memoir and various roles supporting youth development, fostering unity, recognition, and support for those who embody the Olympic spirit. Community activist and licensed counselor Reverend Deborah Pender co-authored Expression of Hope: The Mel Pender Story – Dr. Mel Pender’s biography. Committed to ending social disparities, she has dedicated her life’s work to helping underserved populations. Together, she and Dr. Pender founded the Gathering of Eagles Foundation to continue his life’s legacy.
