ABOUT GATHERING OF EAGLES

We aim to positively transform the lives of 10,000 emerging and established track and field champions. Through targeted resources, scholarships, and community-building events, we strengthen the bonds between athletes, honor the legacy of the sport, and pave the way for future generations to flourish.
BOARD MEMBERS

Debbie Pender

Gathering of Eagles Foundation, Chief Executive Officer Deborah Pender is a motivated individual whose philosophy is rooted in the motto, “Reach One Teach One,” and has extended her life of service on and off the mission field. Deborah received her ministry ordination in 2002 and served as an assistant and international pastor for Bread of Life Pentecostal Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as Gates of Praise Non-Denominational Fellowship in London, England. She received her undergrad in Psychology and Life Coaching from Liberty University and her Master of Social Work from Kennesaw State University in 2023. As a trauma-informed therapist, Deborah knows only too well that we must reach back to help our youth develop the skills to overcome and encourage them with the faith to believe that whatever they set their minds to, they can achieve. She has set her foot firmly in the development of the Gathering of Eagles Foundation, believing in its vision and mission, while creating a legacy of compassion and service that embodies her husband and founder, Dr. Melvin Pender. Together they reside in Marietta, Georgia, and are active in the community.

Mary Kilpatrick Vandiver

Ms. Vandiver has over 40 years of experience in leadership and event planning. She has established herself on multiple boards, including the Metro Atlanta Kiwanis, the Georgia Sickle Cell Foundation, and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women. As a volunteer and member of numerous nonprofit organizations, she has held many positions and served her community with sincere love, passion, and commitment. Ms. Vandiver’s accomplishments include Lecturing graduating special events students at Kennesaw College, authoring a Wedding Event Planning Manual, receiving the “Volunteer of the Year” award from the Georgia Sickle Cell Foundation, President’s Award-NCBW 100, Metropolitan Atlanta Chapter, Employee of the Year Award-Bellsouth, Outstanding Service Award Smartmail, LLC, and Woman of Purpose Award-Cascade United Methodist Church.

Michael Council

Mr. Council, Founder of EC Technology Consulting Services, is a seasoned Cybersecurity and Project Management Consultant with over 25 years of experience in cyber and project management. Michael served 25 years in the military, retiring as an Integrated Air and Missile Defense Tactical Warrant Officer (CW4). Upon retirement, he was honored with the Legion of Merit for his exceptional service to the nation. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Management and a Master of Science in Cybersecurity from the University of Maryland (Global Campus). With a compelling blend of expertise, integrity, and relatability, Michael Council stands as an inspiring figure for the next generation of young people, serving as both mentor and role model. Mr. Council brings youthfulness and vibrancy with a working knowledge of the needs our youth encounter and gives back through community engagement.

Dr. Gerald Curry

Retired Colonel, Dr. Curry, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is Deputy Assistant Secretary (Force Resilience), Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Pentagon, Washington, D.C. He has served for more than 40 years in the federal government, including multiple Air Force assignments as well as the Chief of Staff at the Defense Security Service, and Deputy Associate Secretary for Security at the Department of Energy. In addition to serving the country, Dr. Curry currently lives a life of service as an adjunct professor at the Center for Development of Security Excellence, where he teaches security studies. He is the chief executive officer and co-owner of Curry Brothers Publishing, producing The Urban Voice magazine that circulates throughout Las Vegas, Nevada, and authors children’s books focusing on Olympic legends. He enjoys spending his time mentoring young people and assisting new business startups.

Bobbye Sweat

Ms. Sweat is a nationally recognized leader in Diversity and Inclusion. Her 30-plus years of leadership experience in Fortune 500 companies, including The Boeing Company, Hallmark Cards, J.C. Penney, and AT&T, as well as her current position with First Command Financial Services, have garnered her a wealth of knowledge and respect. Ms. Sweat’s passion for supporting youth and passing on knowledge makes her an excellent mentor and role model. As a leader in Corporate America, she aligns strategy, goals, and program integration while increasing awareness through education and accountability that aligns with the GOEA Foundation's Core Values and Purpose. Ms. Sweat earned her MBA in Total Quality Management from City University, Seattle, Washington, and her BS in Business Administration from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff. She is a Certified Diversity Professional and certified in the 4 Stages of Psychological Safety.

Henry Trudell

Chairs the board as Director of Veterans Support and Youth Leadership Development Lt Col Henry Trudell, a proud combat veteran, retired from the U.S. Army Reserve in October 2023 after 27 years of distinguished service. Mr. Trudell earned numerous awards, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal upon his retirement, the Iraq Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, two Army Commendation Medals, and the Louisiana War Cross. He received the Saint Martin Award for Excellence in Logistics and was inducted into the Order of Saint Martin for his contributions. Mr. Trudell’s academic qualifications and certifications testify to his dedication to continuous learning and professional development. He holds a BA in Mass Communication from Xavier University of Louisiana and an MBA from Northcentral University. His years of service, commitment, and dedication give him the edge on youth leadership development and provide Veterans with the opportunity for community engagement.

Dexter McCloud

Mr. McCloud brings a lifetime of excellence in athletics, technology, and community leadership to the Gathering of Eagles Foundation. A two-time World Indoor Champion and former world record holder in the 60-meter High Hurdles, Mr. McCloud has dedicated himself to the development of young athletes, earning the nickname "Georgia Hurdle Mechanic" for his expertise. He continues to host annual sprint and hurdle camps, sharing his passion and knowledge with the next generation. Mr. McCloud has held numerous leadership roles within USA Track & Field, including Executive Secretary of the National Athletes' Advisory Committee, The first National Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee for USA Track & Field, President (Pro Tempore) of USATF-Georgia, and Executive Vice President of the USATF Georgia Board of Directors. His service was recognized nationally with the USA Track & Field National President's Award in 2009. Building a distinguished 42-year career as a Software Architect and Developer, he has contributed to major companies such as Coca-Cola, BellSouth, Georgia-Pacific, and Southern Company. Upon retirement, Mr. McCloud received his postgraduate degree in Cloud Computing from the University of Texas at Austin.
